Top five cars for less than £5 a day

How much do you spend on your morning coffee and lunch every day? £5? Maybe more? Well, for the same kind of sum you could be driving a brand-new car. Don’t believe it? Neither did we – until we did the maths…

365 x £5.00 = £1,825 per year. Divide that by 12, that gives you a monthly budget of just over £152. When it comes to leasing, that can go further than you think.

To make things very clear, our £5.00 maximum daily budget does not take into account the initial upfront rental, insurance, fuel etc, and offers will always include a mileage allowance. With that in mind, we’ve picked five great cars that’ll cost you not much more than a latte and a lunchtime meal deal…

DS 3

DS 3

Courtesy of its French chic design, customisable colour combos and impressive standard equipment levels, the DS 3 remains the French company’s most popular model. Even the most basic models feature a sleek 7in infotainment system, climate control and alloy wheels – seriously impressive considering you’ll be paying less than a lunchtime to have one on your drive.

There’s a range of seven engines to plump for, although on our kind of budget you’ll be primarily looking at the impressive 1.2-litre turbo petrol. Offering combined fuel economy of up to 61.4mpg, it’ll help keep your fuel bills as low as possible, too.

Ford Focus

Ford Focus

The ubiquitous Ford Focus remains one of the UK’s most popular car for a reason. Several reasons in fact: it’s fun to drive, it’s great value and the wide range of trim levels means there’s something for everyone.

Thanks to an all-new model on the horizon, there’s currently some cracking deals to be had on the current car too. Yes, this is a true family-sized hatchback that you can lease for the same price as a daily return on the bus. All but the most basic models feature Ford’s SYNC3 infotainment system, and the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine line is possibly the best small turbo-petrol currently available. Whichever Focus you go for, you can’t go far wrong.

Honda Jazz

Honda Jazz

The Honda Jazz – not everyone will be a fan of that styling, and its in-car tech leaves a little to be desired, but if practicality is key, here is a small hatchback that can trump the Focus: both can be considered small family hatchbacks, but it's the Jazz that offers the most room.

Its 354-litre boot outdoes Ford’s 316-litre effort, and it isn’t far off the Golf’s (380 litres) either. Still not impressed? Then you might want to know more about the Jazz’s ‘Magic’ rear seats. The bottom half can be flipped upwards entirely, giving you even more space, and making fitting in awkwardly shaped objects a doddle too.

Suzuki Swift

Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift has always lagged behind a little in the face of the massively popular Fiesta and premium-feeling Fabia. Happily, in its latest guise, it’s a decent alternative to either thanks to a much-improved interior and a funky facelift – not to mention a genuinely fun driving experience.

Despite the entry-level 1.2-litre petrol offering just 87bhp and a 0-62mph run of 11.9 seconds, its lightweight body and nimble steering set-up means it’s as close to an original Mini as you can get. In other words, if you want an agile supermini that feels fast on its feet, this is by far the best bet.

Citroen C4 Cactus

Citroen C4 Cactus

A crossover? For a fiver a day? Ok ok, we’ll admit that we’re not talking about the all-new C4 Cactus but, like the Focus above, a new model means there’s some fantastic deals to be had on the outgoing version. Its main rivals include Nissan’s Juke as well as more mundane-looking crossovers like the Dacia Duster, but neither can compete with the Citroen’s interior.

A digital display and some neat details help it stand out almost as much as the exterior and, being a Citroen, it’s supremely comfortable thanks to sumptuous seats and soft suspension. Admittedly the result of the latter means it’s not the most sporting of vehicles, but if you want something a little larger and more comfortable than the choices above for an absolutely fantastic price, look no further than the funky C4 Cactus.
