Alfa Romeo adds Veloce trim to Giulia line-up

The new Alfa Romeo Giulia has been a long time coming, but it’s finally available here in the UK - and the range has been expanded to include the Veloce.

Built around Alfa Romeo’s all new rear-wheel drive architecture, the Giulia is positioned as an alternative to the Jaguar XE, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class.

 The Giulia is available with a number of trim levels.

The Giulia model range features a number of trims – the Giulia, Super, Tecnica, Speciale, Veloce and the range-topping Quadrifoglio – with a choice of four engine variants – two petrol and two diesel – all paired to a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

At £29,180, the entry level Giulia will be available with a 200bhp 2.0-litre turbo engine and also includes a host of active safety systems.

This includes Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) with pedestrian recognition, Integrated Brake System (IBS), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Eight-speed automatic gearbox with steering wheel-mounted controls is standard across the range.

Its fantastic safety rating is somewhat of a surprise, as initially the company stated that such equipment was deemed out of step with the company’s ‘soulful’ character and would not feature.

However, they have all contributed toward giving the manufacturer a five star Euro NCAP rating and a 98 per cent protection result for adult occupants.

Exterior features include 16-inch alloy wheels, LED rear lights, chrome exhaust and aluminium brake calipers, while the interior of the car focuses on driving satisfaction as is to be expected from Alfa Romeo.

As such it comes complete with dual-zone climate control, driving mode selector, a 6.5 inch display infotainment system, rear parking sensors and cruise control.

The Veloce model sits below the fire-breathing Quadrifoglio V6, but is still potent enough for most requirements.

As of April 2017, a new trim features in the UK line-up: the Veloce. It features the same 2.0-litre petrol engine as other models, but it’s tuned to produce 276bhp; much more than the 197bhp on offer from more standard versions.

It’s also available with the 178bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine which, while not as quick as its petrol stable mate, produces an impressive 470Nm of torque.

This model also benefits from the same all-wheel-drive ‘Q4’ system as the Quadrifoglio, while visually it is set apart by gloss-black trim on the outside and leather sports seats on the inside.

Range-topping Quadrifoglio gets Ferrari-derived V6, all-wheel-drive and a host of external enhancements.

At the top of the range, the Quadrifoglio is powered by a new 510hp, 600Nm Bi-Turbo V6 petrol engine. Hitting 0-62 in just 3.9 secs, this proves more than a match for the Jaguar XE’s 335bhp supercharged V6 and the BMW M3’s 425bhp straight six.

With pricing starting at £59,000 for the range topper, you may be wondering what you got for an additional £30k on the entry-level model. Well, there’s a V6 engine engine for starters, as well as a host of technical gear designed specifically to maximise dynamic performance.

Other extras include a patented aero splitter system, and torque vectoring. Like the BMW M3 or the Audi RS3, the Quadrifoglio is very much aimed at the enthusiast, and is a very different beast to the mainstream diesel models.

Despite this model appealing to the racer inside of us all, the V6 engine has also been designed to be reasonably frugal. With deactivation technology shutting down cylinders when they aren’t needed, Alfa claims the 3.0-litre petrol is “surprisingly efficient”, and gets an official combined mpg figure of 34mpg.

As well as fitting a rip-roaring engine, Alfa Romeo has worked hard on the Giulia’s underpinnings. The chassis is very stiff, while the suspension is very much set up for handling with F1-style double-wishbone geometry at the front and adaptive dampers all-round to ensure that the wheels remain in contact with the ground as much as possible.

More evidence of technical know-how can be found on the car’s exterior, where the sleek, rounded design is punctuated by aerodynamic touches like the adaptive front splitter and the deep rear diffuser, while Chassis Domain Control uses the on-board computer to keep everything in check.

The Giulia is the first Alfa in a long time that can fight the German competition on all fronts.
