VW Golf tops European sales charts
Written By Paul Lucas Published On: Oct 17 2009 The Volkswagen Golf has once again topped the list of Europe’s most popular vehicles – but the gap to its nearest rival is closing.According to data released by industry trackers JATO Dynamics, the VW Golf finished ahead of the Ford Fiesta in sales during September, but the Fiesta is steadily decreasing the gap on the leader. In total, the VW Golf sold 59,552 models during the month, with the Fiesta selling 51,291 units. The gap to third place is much larger – that position is occupied by the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa with 38,947 units sold. Indeed all of the models that proved to be the month’s biggest hits benefited from national scrappage schemes – the rest of the top 10 was made up of the Ford Focus, the Peugeot 207, the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, the Renault Clio, the Fiat Punto, the Fiat Panda and the Renault Megane. All of the best-sellers enjoyed significant increases from 14-90 per cent over their September 2008 sales with David Di Girolamo, the head of JATO Consulting, telling The Independent that the market is being driven by small cars and new models.Of course with many of these government initiatives ending across Europe, it remains to be seen if these economical vehicles continue to be the most popular choice.
