The Queen of all driving songs
Written By Paul Lucas Published On: Sep 15 2009 Those of us old enough to remember the 80s may cringe at those New Romantic haircuts or our addiction to Dallas, but there’s no denying that the decade produced some truly memorable music. So what tops our 80s drive time top 10? According to HPI, Queen’s I want to break free is the ultimate driving anthem, even though motorists don’t have the image of a cross-dressing Freddie Mercury doing some vacuuming in front of them as they motor along… or perhaps that’s part of the appeal.Taking second spot is Soft Cell’s Tainted Love, followed by Michael Jackson’s classic Billie Jean.Nicola Johnson, HPI’s consumer services manager, believes British drivers are still hooked on anthem rock.“Our survey shows that UK motorists love a bit of anthem rock when they’re behind the wheel, as Eye of the Tiger by Survivor sneaks in at number four,” she said. “Courting controversy at the time, Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax is still popular with 80s kids, taking the number five spot. No 80s top ten would be complete without A-ha, U2 or the Police, who all feature in the chart with party favourite, Come on Eileen sneaking in at number 10.”HPI does remind drivers however, to make their vehicle choices based on reliability rather than opting for a car with the best mod-cons just to listen to their favourite tracks in style.
