Souped up Insignia Sports Tourer on the way
Written By Richard Lawton Published On: May 20 2009 We’ve brought you exciting news of the forthcoming Insignia VXR before on this website; and we’ve also loved driving the new Insignia Sports Tourer – you can read the review on our sister site RoadTestReports.co.uk here; now Vauxhall has confirmed that the longer Insignia will also be available in a VXR variant this autumn.
The Sports Tourer is the third and final body style to be offered with the VXR spec – with both the hatch and saloon versions also available for those wanting an exciting mix of performance and refinement. So what can we expect with the new estate?Firstly, Vauxhall are claiming this to be their fastest ever estate car, capable of 0-60mph in 6 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155mph, utilising a modified version of the meaty 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 found in the Insignia Elite model.External aesthetics have been beefed up to reflect the performance with 19” alloys as standard (with 20” an optional extra), deeper bumpers, front mesh grilles, and duel chrome exhausts, meanwhile inside the cabin expect Recaro front seats, VXR branded steering wheel and gearstick, and different instrument graphics. The car doesn’t stomp all over its estate roots however with 540 litre luggage space in the boot, which expands to a whopping 1530 litres with the rear seats down; and the usual innovative Insignia technology is also still in place.
‘The Insignia VXR Sports Tourer will be a compelling alternative for buyers in the premium sector who may currently be considering an Audi S4 Avant or BMW 335i M Sport Touring,’ said Andy Gilson, Vauxhall’s Marketing Director. ‘We’ve already seen a swing to the Insignia from premium buyers who’d never before ticked the Vauxhall box on their wish list, and we expect to see the same buying pattern emerge with all versions of the Insignia VXR.’Colour palette comprising Arden Blue, Power Red, Carbon Flash Black (pictured), Silver Lake, Olympic White and Technical Grey.Pricing has yet to be finalised, more information when we get it.What do you think about the new Insignia VXR – can it truly challenge the Audi’s and BMW’s in the performance stakes?
