Photos from the Geneva Motor Show
Written By Richard Lawton Published On: Mar 03 2010Here’s our pick of the best cars from the 80th Geneva Motor Show – open to the public from Thursday 4th March.
First up is probably the start of the whole show – in our eyes at least. The all-new Audi A1 is without doubt going to be incredibly popular car when it arrives in the UK later in the year. Opening up a whole new car buying segment to the German marque. It simply oozes quality, as this picture shows.
Staying with Audi, the brand has also showcased it’s Audi A8 Hybrid, while still classed as a concept car it’s probably going to hit production in 2011, and the Audi A1 e-tron which is a range extending electric car with a small petrol engine. Another “confirmed for production” model however was the seriously beautiful Audi RS5, based on you’ve guessed it the big coupé – A5. Looking glorious in red.
Popping over to the Bentley stand they have one of the most eye-catching Bentley’s ever seen – it is one of their bespoke Series 51 Continental GTs in a rather strange purple colour.
Far nicer in our book is the ultimate Continental drop top performance car from Bentley – the Supersports arrived last year, and memorably performed superbly on the hill climb at Goodwood, well now the Crewe-based manufacturer has revealed the Supersports Convertible – the fastest four-seat convertible in the world apparently. Lighter than the convertible GTS version the car can run on E85 bioethanol or petrol!
The big news over at the Lexus stand was the official unveiling of their next production car – the Lexus CT-200h. The premium marque’s first toe in the water of the smaller car world. What makes this potentially so special is the hybrid powertrain – meaning low emissions, high fuel economy, and plenty of specification (well it is a Lexus!)
Lexus isn’t the only manufacturer with a production ready hybrid car coming out – both Toyota and Honda have exciting additions to their rosters arriving in the summer. Firstly, the Toyota Auris HSD will be one of the lowest CO2 emitting cars available in the UK – at only 89g/km it matches the “green champion” Toyota Prius – no small feat.
Not to be out done Honda has been busy perfecting their all-new hybrid coupé the CR-Z. This 2+2 seater promises to have sporty performance yet emit only 117g/km of CO2.
A number of larger crossovers, estates, and people carriers have also been confirmed and shown at the show – the all-new 2011 Ford Focus will arrive with an Estate version, the Mazda5 is brand spanking new and promises to remain the sporty alternative to those wanting a people carrier, and the Volkswagen Sharan has been heavily revised for 2010.
At the smaller end of the market is the seriously funky British-built Nissan Juke and the SEAT Ibiza ST – both promises bags of internal space but on supermini-sized floor plans. Not forgetting the new shape to the MINI family – the Countryman. This will be the first ever 4 door MINI, and will be available in a choice of 2 or 4 wheel drive options.
The overall theme to this year’s show has undoubtedly been electric cars – with most of the car makers showing off concept electric and hybrid cars. Some will no doubt come to market others will gather dust but what is irrefutable is that the automotive industry is on the cusp of a green revolution.
