Keeping your car warm in cold weather
Written By Richard Lawton Published On: Jan 26 2012With cold weather still forecast, it is important that you consider your safety when driving on the roads. There are a number of maintenance jobs and safety checks that should be made to prevent any unexpected repairs, so make sure you take the necessary steps to keep everything fighting fit.
With the change of any season, it is vital that you make necessary changes to your car to ensure you are prepared for the different driving conditions. Maintenance checks should be conducted regularly but this is even more important during inclement weather.

So if you are a bit unsure where to start, here are a few tips to help get you and your car ready for the road:
1. Tyres - your tyres, in many cases are your life line. Unexpected, treacherous conditions can cause havoc on the roads so it’s important that you invest in quality tyres. Check your tyres’ tread depth to ensure they comply with the National Highway Transportation Safety Board, which states your tyres should be at least 2/32” deep. Also, be sure to check your tyre pressure, as this can lower in cold weather which will affect your car’s handling.
2. Antifreeze - antifreeze is the liquid that goes in your radiator and is a crucial part of your car’s winter protection. Your car should contain a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze, so make sure the level is full. If you are unsure how to do this, many service stations or repair centres will check your levels for free.
3. Wipers - with anything from snow, rain, acorns or greenery falling on your windscreen, it is important to make sure you have good quality wipers to keep your windscreen clean and safe. Make sure that you windows, mirrors and lights are fully clear of ice or snow before you depart for your journey.
4. Washer fluid - in order to keep your windscreen clean, washer fluid is used and this can be used up quickly. It is important to only fill the reservoir with washer fluid but remember that the washer jet or nozzle may become blocked with ice, preventing the flow.
5. Battery - starting your car should be hassle free, but colder weather can affect this. Check the charge of your battery regularly and make sure it is in good condition. Make sure you have adequate breakdown cover to protect you should you encounter problems when away from home.
6. Spark plug wires - identify if you have any cracked spark plugs, as if they go unnoticed then the performance, mileage and overall reliability of your car can be affected.
7. Brakes - make sure your brakes are in good condition at all times by investing in a regular service. Remember that breaking distances will also be much greater in wet or icy conditions so adjust your speed and road position accordingly.
It is important that you make all these important checks on your vehicle to keep yourself well protected. Car breakdown cover should also be obtained to provide you with additional security in case you do develop any problems whilst out and about.
Obtaining a breakdown cover comparison will help you to find the best cover for your budget and should therefore be your first step in protecting your car.
