Irish toll plan branded ‘absurd’

“This makes absolutely no sense at all.”That was the verdict of AA director of policy Conor Faughnan, speaking about plans to introduce tolls on national routes in Ireland.The concept is one of several ideas that have been estimated to offer local authorities savings in the region of 500 Euros. These include reducing the number of senior council officials, axing “off-road” exemption for motor tax and increasing driving licence fees.However, the toll idea has been deemed “absurd” and a serious attack on rural Ireland.Mr Faughan said “the only purpose is to raise extra money,” and that using tolls is extremely inefficient and very costly.
