Lex have revealed that amongst its fleet of over 250,000 vehicles, Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen feature 7 times within the top ten. The Vauxhall Astra was the most popular car, followed closely by the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Vectra.

The Audi A3, one of the most popular searches on ContractHireAndLeasing.com, recorded the biggest volume increase with the Ford Mondeo also performing strongly.

Diesel models once again dominated, accounting for 80% of all cars purchased.

The Volkswagen Golf moved from 3rd place to become the most searched for model during January 2008. 9 out of the 10 models have remained in the top 10 with the only change being the BMW X5 dropping to 11th place (this could well be due to the imminent release of the new BMW X6). The Audi A3 Sportback has moved up to take its place.

  1. Volkswagen Golf
  2. Land Rover Range Rover Sport
  3. BMW 3-Series Coupe
  4. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon
  5. Audi Q7
  6. BMW 5-Series Saloon

  8. Audi A3
  9. Audi A3 Sportback
  10. Ford Focus

Ford, Vauxhall and VW dominate the list of the 10 most popular company cars supplied by Lex during 2007.

According to the Lex for 2007, Vauxhall, Ford, and VW took seven out of the top 10 places.

The Vauxhall Astra was the most popular car on the Lex fleet of 273,503 vehicles, closely followed by the Ford Focus, while overall Ford was the most popular fleet brand securing three out of the top 10 spaces.

The cars that rose in popularity by volume were the Audi A3 (4th place) and Ford Mondeo (5th), both of which weren’t in the top 10 in 2005 when Lex last carried out the survey, while the VW Golf fell the furthest from 1st in 2005 to 9th in 2007.

Diesel models continued to dominate the fuel mix in 2007, accounting for 80% of all cars purchased, compared with 64% in 2005. With company car drivers benefiting from lower Benefit in Kind tax costs and lower personal fuel bills from choosing a diesel, these figures could rise still further in 2008.

“The last few times we have carried out this analysis a Focus/Golf/Astra sized car has proven the most popular fleet car,” explained Steve Jones, Lex Pricing Manager.

“The Government’s move to a CO2 based Benefit in Kind tax system has certainly helped encourage company motorists to downsize their choice of car. And with more different versions of the same car being launched by manufacturers, company motorists have got a wider choice than they have ever had before,” he added.

The fleet sector continues to help boost overall new car sales in the UK. According to SMMT statistics, in 2007 1,194,811 cars were bought by fleets, a rise of 3.3% over 2006.

The British weather is a constant source of amusement to people from outside the UK and a constant source of frustration to those of us who live here. This is why the British love-affair with convertibles may seem slightly peculiar but the stats state that Brits register more open top cars than any other European country.

It is not just within the 2 week long summer that these cars appear on our roads, as soon as Spring has sprung the convertibles come out of hibernation and hardy souls can been seen driving with the roof down wearing clothing that would make an Eskimo sweat. The outside perception of eccentricity is only strengthened when they see us driving convertibles in March with the temperature not too far above zero.

Audi A4 CabrioletConvertibles have always been a popular car leasing choice with the Audi A4 Cabriolet being the most popular but not far behind are the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, the Saab 9-3 Convertible and the BMW 3-Series Convertible.

The 5 most popular convertibles being leased at the moment are

  1. Audi A4 Cabriolet
  2. Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class
  3. Saab 9-3 Convertible
  4. BMW 3-Series Convertible
  5. Renault Megane Coupe Cabriolet
  6. Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Cabriolet
