Fleet Safety Forum calls for entries to awards

Organisations that have worked to improve fleet safety are being urged to start preparing their entries now for the annual Fleet Safety Forum Awards for Excellence, sponsored by ARVAL, to be in with a chance of winning in 2010. The Awards, which will be presented at a gala dinner at Chesford Grange, Warwickshire on Thursday 1 July 2010, are now in their tenth year.

Run by the Fleet Safety Forum, a division of Brake, the national road safety charity, the prestigious and long-standing awards recognise the achievements of those working to help reduce the number of costly and in many cases fatal road crashes involving at-work drivers.

Last year’s winners included Citroën UK, Royal Mail, Johnson & Johnson, Kidds Distribution Services and Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service.

Entries are invited from organisations running any type of fleet and from companies that provide products or services to fleets, who have worked to improve fleet safety. Awards are available in the following ten categories:

1. Road Risk Manager of the Year Award for the risk or fleet manager who has implemented exemplary road risk management policies with proven results.
2. Company Driver Safety Award for the organisation that has implemented initiatives that do most to promote safe driving among employees.
3. Fleet Safety Analysis and Action Award for the organisation that has implemented the most effective procedures for carrying out risk assessments, crash data analysis, and introducing tailored interventions.
4. Safe Vehicles Award for the organisation that has implemented the most effective maintenance procedures and technology to improve the safety of its vehicles.
5. Eco Fleet Award (NEW IN 2010) for the organisation that has done the most to improve safety and the environment by introducing green initiatives, from innovative travel plans, to fuel efficient driving and more.
6. Road Safety in the Community Award for the organisation that has worked hardest with its local community to improve road safety for all road users.
7. Fleet Safety Provider of the Year Award for the fleet service provider that has offered outstanding services to improve fleet safety.
8. Fleet Safety Product Award for the product that does the most to improve fleet safety through innovation.
9. Vehicle Manufacturer Award for safe vehicle design.
10. Kevin Storey Award for Outstanding Commitment to Road Safety for the organisation or individual that has gone above and beyond the call of duty in its commitment to road safety, not just within the company but also the wider community. Organisations cannot enter this Award themselves, but can nominate someone else within the industry by emailing fleetsafetyforum@brake.org.uk.

Some awards are divided into categories for small and large organisations. To see a full list of last year’s results, visit www.brake.org.uk, click on Fleet Safety Forum, then Awards for Excellence.

Whether entering an award or not, organisations are invited to attend the awards dinner, which will include a drinks reception, three course meal, and an evening of entertainment, fundraising and dancing! The Fleet Safety Forum Awards is a fantastic community event, bringing together people across the motor industry who are passionate about stopping death and injury on roads through risk management.

Tickets cost £95 each or £900 for a table of ten. As an extra incentive, a year’s subscription to the Fleet Safety Forum (normally £155 + VAT) is FREE with every table booking. A charity auction and casino will take place on the night, with all funds going to Brake, the road safety charity, to help fund their life-saving educational work and care services for road crash victims.

To enter, click here to go to the Awards page of the Brake website, where you can download an entry form. Entry forms must be returned by email by Monday 12 April 2010.

To book tickets for the dinner dance call Brake on 01484 559909 or email admin@brake.org.uk.

The Fleet Safety Forum is a long standing division of Brake, the national road safety charity. It provides an invaluable subscription service to support organisations in managing their occupational road risk, reducing crashes and saving lives. It also helps companies to save on the costs associated with collisions and badly maintained vehicles, such as insurance and fuel costs. For more info, go to www.brake.org.uk and click on ‘Join us’.

In 2008, 29 per cent of all UK road deaths happened in crashes involving an at-work driver. Figures obtained by Brake from the Department for Transport, August 2009.

Roz Cumming, Fleet Safety Forum Manager at Brake, says: “The Awards present a fantastic opportunity to receive national recognition for your commitment to fleet safety. We had a record number of entries in 2009, with more and more fleets acting positively to manage their risks to improve safety, save money and the environment. We hope to see the trend continuing into 2010, and urge all types of organisation to get involved by entering and participating in a great night’s entertainment and networking.”

Tracey Young, Fleet & Road Safety Manager for Arval, says: “Arval is proud to sponsor the 2009 Brake Fleet Safety Forum Awards. Road safety is vital, especially when you consider that one in three crashes involve a vehicle being driven for work. That’s why we work in partnership with Brake, and its customers, to develop and implement risk management and road safety policies that will help protect employees, pedestrians and all other road users.”
