Chrysler is set to ditch more than a quarter of its US dealerships as part of its restructuring program.
The troubled US car maker is to break contracts with 789 of its estimated 3,200 stateside Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealers. Chrysler, now under Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings is under pressure to complete a restructuring process ahead of its alliance with Italian car maker, Fiat.
The National Automobile Dealers Association lamented the news, a statement on the organisations’ website said: “These dealers and their more than 40,000 employees have done nothing but proudly represent the Chrysler brand through good times and bad, and today find themselves left behind as the company reorganizes itself in bankruptcy court.”
Despite the news, UK Chrysler dealers seem to be optimistic about their future, as an alliance with Fiat is expected to strengthen the brands presence in Europe.
“As far as the UK operations are concerned, we are continuing as normal,” a spokeswoman for Chrysler UK told the Birmingham Post.
Chrysler went into administration on April 30, and is set to emerge from court protection on July 1.
