Perhaps lost in the furore of the Chancellor’s Pre Budget Report (PBR) is the confirmation that the once postponed 2p per litre in fuel duty will now go ahead from 01 December 2008. Sure to make small waves in comparison to the reduction in VAT and postponement of VED changes, but due to impact further on motorists.
Back in April 2008, amidst soaring fuel prices Alistair Darling announced the proposed 2p increase would be postponed until later in the year, and while there had been some speculation that this increase could well have been further postponed the recent dramatic falls in crude oil prices and with significant reductions in the cost of fuel at UK forecourts up and down the country, the Chancellor has announced that this increase in duty will go ahead.
Also confirmed in the PBR is the further increase in fuel duty on 01 April 2009 of a further 1.84p per litre rise.
