February 2009 will see the release of the Porsche Cayenne Diesel, equipped with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine with 240 bhp (176 kW), supplied by Audi AG. Recent European tax incentives for vehicles with diesel engines have inspired Porsche to once again extend its engine range for the all-wheel drive car, in an attempt to utilise sporty compression-ignition technology.
The new Cayenne model will initially be offered in Europe due to customer demand, although plans are in place for market introduction elsewhere. An average consumption of 30.4mpg Combined with emissions of 244g/km CO² demonstrates the German sports car manufacturer’s continuing commitment to reduce fuel consumption, whilst there is also talk of a hybrid drive Cayenne variant looming on the horizon. This comes as no surprise as Porsche have been introducing petrol direct injection engines, which consume up to 15 per cent less fuel, into various models since spring 2007.
The spontaneous throttle response and high torque characteristics of this diesel engine deliver a spirited performance level, as would be expected from the athletic, all-terrain Cayenne. With sports-oriented chassis dynamics and a high degree of control, it is easy to see why Porsche are confident in maintaining the long term market success of their SUV.
Look out for the new arrival at Porsche Centres as of February, costing from £40,250.
