The votes have been counted and after a hard fought battle the impressive Vauxhall/Opel Insignia has pipped the Ford Fiesta to the prestigious title. The winning margin? A tiny single point.
The all-new family focused Insignia polled an impressive 321 votes from the 59 motoring journalists from 23 countries in Europe; scooping top marks from 20 of the journalists. While the excellent new Fiesta can consider itself very unlucky with 19 journalists giving it top marks, and scoring a total of 320 votes.
The Vauxhall Insignia will now join the Fiat 500, Toyota Prius, and Renault Megane to name three previous winners of the award.
“This is the closest COTY competition for years,” comments Ray Hutton, president of the jury of senior motoring journalists. “Car of the Year has often been decided narrowly, but it is eight years since another Ford, the Mondeo, was beaten by a single point by Alfa Romeo’s 147.”
