Local authorities are paying more in compensation to motorists who have suffered as a result of potholes than they spend on actually repairing the roads.
Local Government Association (LGA) blamed ‘no win-no fee’ solicitors for creating a compensation culture, The Guardian reported.
The national newspaper revealed that councils in England and Wales spent £53m in compensation to drivers compared £52.3m on road repairs.
Council staff spent a total of 40,801 working days dealing with compensation claims.
David Sparks, chairman of the LGA’S transport and regeneration board told the paper;
“The money councils are losing through dubious compensation claims does nothing but add to the misery of our nation’s road users”
