Town hall officials have removed road signs from a road in Hampshire in the belief that it will improve the safety records.

Safety representatives of Southampton council have removed street signs and speed cameras in a bid to make motorists drive more carefully by deliberately confusing them, the Daily Mail reports.

The national newspaper suggests that this method, known as ‘naked roads’ is believed to make motorist drive safely by puzzling them.

White lines, pedestrian crossing and other road markings have also been removed from London Road in Southampton.

As a busy road, near a nightlife hot-spot, the move has caused some concern. Brian Gregory from Association of British Drivers (ABD) told the newspaper;

“I have grave concerns about this scheme and how it would work”

However a council spokesman countered;

“By creating uncertainty all road users are forced to pay attention and interact with each other.”
