Motorists face having to renew their licences every five years following compulsory eye tests to check they are still fit to drive.
A new EU directive could see motorists paying for a new licence which will state whether they have any visual impairment the Daily Mail reported.
The new legislation could come into force as soon as 2013 and would see the scrapping the traditional vision check of reading of a number plate from 20 metres scrapped in favour of a more thorough eye examination.
A DfT spokesperson told the national newspaper that “no decisions have yet been taken”.
