GM to cut 10,000 Opel jobs

General Motors has announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs within its European brand Opel.The announcement follows GM’s decision not to sell Opel to car parts manufacturer, Magna. After a board meeting on Tuesday, GM revealed yesterday that it would instead retain the brand which includes Vauxhall in the UK but would look to instigate a ‘restructuring process’.The US auto giant also said yesterday that it would work with European labour unions to develop a plan for ‘meaningful contributions’ to Opel’s restructuring.Unions in Germany said workers would begin walk-outs from Thursday in protest at GM's decision to cut jobs. German trade unions now fear two of the four Opel factories in the country could close under the GM plan. The projected job losses are similar in number to those that Magna was likely to cut, but GM has yet to reveal details of where the redundancies will be made.Unite joint general secretary, Tony Woodley, said: "The problems for General Motors were rooted in the US, not in the UK where our plants restructured themselves years ago, becoming the best and most efficient in Europe.”However Mr Woodley has since told the BBC that job losses at Vauxhall would be "inevitable".Vauxhall employs around 5,500 people in the UK at its Ellesmere Port and Luton plants.
