Ford unveils inflatable seatbelts

In an effort to reduce the risk of injuries to rear-seat passengers, Ford has unveiled the car industry’s first production-ready inflatable rear-seatbelts.The new technology, which will eventually be made available globally, combines the traditional attributes of a shoulder seatbelt and an airbag. Just 40 milliseconds after a crash occurs, the seatbelt inflates to distribute the impact over five times the body area of a conventional restraint, reducing the chances of serious injury.The decision to create inflatable seatbelts follows on from the success of airbags, which have increased the safety of front seat passengers. Ford now hopes that the new seatbelts will do the same for rear seat occupants with children and older passengers more prone to trauma.According to a report in The Independent, the seatbelts feel different on the body than traditional shoulder harnesses, but, according to Ford, 90 per cent of their research participants found the inflatable seatbelts similar to or more comfortable than traditional belts.The first inflatable seatbelts will go on sale with the fifth generation Ford Explorer America SUV, which will debut next year. There has been no official target set for introducing the technology globally.The seatbelts follow a similar innovation in the Lexus LF-A supercar, which featured front-seatbelt airbags on its debut at the Tokyo Auto Show last month.
