Hot on the heels of the news that new car registrations are down 30.5% for the important month of March, the SMMT have revealed that times are equally as difficult in the depressed commercial vehicles sector.“UK demand for vans and trucks remains low,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. “Trucks are down 37% this year, with vans down 46% on the volume at quarter one 2008 and we think registrations may drop further. It will take time before the Chancellor's financial stimulus policies work, so we need the government to do more to stabilise markets and give firms and households the confidence to buy.”Registrations in March were down 42.1%, and 23.9% to 300,629 for the rolling year which includes vans and trucks.
In total, 29,822 new vans were registered during the month, with 48,684 registered in the first three months of the year – down 45.6%.Top commercial vehicle manufacturer was Ford (Ford Transit pictured) again with a growing market share approaching a third of the total market. Vauxhall, Citroen, Volkswagen, and Nissan complete the top five.
