Car production falls 59 per cent in February

UK car production fell 59 per cent in February representing a reduction of 58.8 per cent for the year to date as the motor industry continues to suffer from suppressed market demand.The Society of Motor Manufacturers’ (SMMT) latest figures reveal that just 59,777 cars were produced in February, representing the fifth consecutive month of decline.Production of commercial vehicle production displayed an even weaker market with manufacture down 71.6 per cent in the last month.In total, over 300,000 vehicles have been from total vehicle output in the past 14 months.“The large fall in February’s vehicle production is a direct result of weak demand and the need to protect the highly-skilled workforce and valuable industrial capability in the UK automotive sector,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.“We have seen action to encourage longer-term investment, but still require government support for short-time working, easier access to finance and credit and the implementation of a vehicle scrappage scheme.”
