Calls for more parking security

Too often, it could be argued, we wait for something bad to happen before we act – however, Derby City Council is determined that this should not be the case.The council’s leader, Chris Williamson, has called for better lighting to improve the safety of drivers walking back to their cars at a park and ride facility used by University of Derby students.Currently, students can pay £50 a year to park at Markeaton Park and take a shuttle bus to the Kedleston Road Campus.A spokesman from the university claims that the university itself has paid £18,000 from its own budget to install CCTV at the council owned car park and a university security guard has been deployed at the site from after dark until 6:15pm. The spokesman also stated that there are plans to install high standard lighting.Councillor Williamson is eager that the lighting be in place before an incident occurs stating that the car park is isolated and with a lot of young people using it, they are very vulnerable – and one incident is “one too many”.
