C5 gets greener and meaner
Written By Faye Sunderland Published On: Nov 09 2009 Citroen is introducing a number of upgrades to its C5 model to improve the power, performance and emissions ratings. With immediate effect, the VTR+ NAV saloon is to gain an extra 12hp through the use of a new BMW co-developed 1.6i 16v THP engine. This Euro V engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and produces 155hp.The new 1.6i 16V THP 155hp petrol delivers 240Nm (177lb.ft) of torque at 1400rpm and an 8 per cent increase in power, combined with an 18.5 per cent increase in combined-cycle fuel economy and a 16 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions - down from 198g/km to 167g/km. Thanks to the lower emissions, VED is reduced from £215 to £175.
Equally a new 2.0HDi 16V 160hp diesel replaces the 2.0HDi 16V 140hp and the 2.2HDi 16V 173hp engines. Also Euro V rated, this new unit offers the choice of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox and is available on both Saloon and Tourer models, in VTR+ NAV and Exclusive trim. The new 2.0HDi 16V 160hp diesel provides 340Nm (251lb.ft) of torque at 2000rpm and - in comparison to the out-going 140hp manual C5 Saloon - a 14 per cent increase in power, a 3 per cent increase in fuel economy (combined cycle) and reduced CO2 emissions - down 4 per cent from 153g/km to 147g/km. The lower emissions means VED is reduced from £150 to £125 (includes the Tourer manual). For the automatic versions, CO2 emissions are 179g/km on both the Saloon and Tourer - reduced from 189g/km and 191g/km respectively. In both cases VED is reduced by £40, from £215 to £175.Significantly, for company car drivers and business contract hire, BIK taxation charges also reduce with the launch of these new engines. The SX trim level is renamed VTR although the specification remains unchanged and Citroen has also introduced the integration of a new Bluetooth® system with USB box as standard equipment on Exclusive models.
